While a single round of betting is a common practice, poker is most often played in more complex forms. In addition to the above options, a poker player can check, which means that he or she does not owe anything to the pot. The player who checks is said to “stand pat” or to “drop.” A player who checks may be unable to compete for the pot. Eventually, the pot will be won if a player makes a bet that no one else will call.
